MCP vs. agent connectors: how agents reach apps

MCP is the standard interface for handing tools to an agent. Agent connectors handle auth, hosting, and breadth. Here's how they fit.

People frame this as MCP vs. connectors, like one wins. Wrong question. MCP is a protocol. Connectors are infrastructure. You want both.

What MCP is

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard interface for handing an agent tools and data. Instead of a bespoke tool format per model, you write an MCP server once and any client that speaks the protocol can call it. That standardization is useful, and I build on MCP in my own stack.

But a protocol doesn’t run anything. It defines the shape of the call, not the auth, the hosting, or the accounts behind it.

What agent connectors add

The hard part of connecting an agent to your real apps isn’t the call format. It’s everything around it: OAuth per service, token refresh, rate limits, a server to host it all — then doing it again for every new app.

You can wire every integration by hand on top of MCP. I have. It’s the setup tax that kills most agent projects before they ship.
