Access is the loud half of the problem: connect an agent to your apps and it can finally do things. The quiet half is control. The moment an agent can send email, move money, or push to a repo, “it can act” stops being a feature and becomes a liability you have to manage.
That second half is why guardrails exist.
AI agent guardrails, in three parts
At CoreSpeed I treat control as three concrete things:
- Plain-English policy. Rules you can read, not a config DSL nobody on the team understands. What the agent may do, and where it stops.
- Approvals. Human-in-the-loop on the actions that matter. The agent proposes, you confirm. Routine work flows; risky work waits for a person.
- Agent Pay. Spending limits and budgets, so an agent can transact without the worst case being an empty account.
The line between demo and product
A demo runs once, watched, on a happy path. Production runs unattended, on inputs you didn’t plan for, with real consequences. Access without control is fine in a demo and reckless in production.
Guardrails are what let you walk away and leave the agent running. Set policy once, approve what needs a person, cap what it can spend — then let it handle the routine work on its own.
Control travels with the agent
Your policy isn’t tied to one tool. Apps, memory, voice, and policy move with the agent across Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor. Switch where you run it and the rules don’t reset. The guardrails you wrote still hold.
